Donation among $1.6 million in grants to 160 nonprofits for community development

MOBILE, AL – First Horizon Bank has provided a $10,000 grant to Goodwill Gulf Coast through its “Grants for Good” campaign in honor of the bank’s 160th anniversary. After receiving more than 3,500 applications, the First Horizon Foundation awarded $1.6 million to 160 nonprofits across the bank’s service area that have made a significant impact on the development and stability of their communities.

The grant received by Goodwill Gulf Coast will be used to purchase equipment for a Serenity Room in the Kaleidoscope program area, which will allow participants, all of whom have intellectual disabilities, improve their coping skills and increase their self-regulation capabilities during the daytime program’s operating hours. Research shows that this type of room, which utilizes sensory equipment that provides light, sound, movement and vibration experiences, can serve to calm and restore balance for individuals with diverse needs when everyday events become overwhelming.

“Having this type of Serenity Room for our Kaleidoscope participants represents a new way for us to assist them in developing and applying coping skills in their lives,” Frank Harkins, President and CEO of Goodwill Gulf Coast, said. “We appreciate the support of First Horizon to help make this possible.”

Goodwill Gulf Coast's Kaleidoscope Adult Day Program is a unique community resource which provides a social and recreational outlet for adults with disabilities to stay active and to give their parents the ability to keep working, knowing their loved one is active, safe and happy.  A major expansion, completed this year, doubled the program’s physical space, enabling the enrollment of new participants.

Headquartered in Memphis, TN, First Horizon Bank operates in 12 states across the southern U.S. First Horizon Foundation is the private charitable foundation of First Horizon Corporation. Founded in 1993, the foundation has donated more than $150 million to address needs in the communities the bank serves.
